Odell’s Extra Special Red is a decadent Imperial American Amber Ale that bridges the gap between bold hopping and barrel-matured complexity. Six months of aging in rye whiskey casks transforms the profile, layering notes of sweet vanilla and soft oak tannins over a robust, crimson malt foundation. While the initial juicy hop character of pine and stone fruit has mellowed into a supportive role, it still provides a subtle resinous lift against the rich caramel. The significant strength is evident through a smooth, integrated alcohol warmth, while the rye influence adds a spicy nuance to the malt-forward finish, resulting in a sophisticated, spirit-tinged sensory experience.
Appearance. Deep crimson to coppery-brown with excellent clarity. Pours with a moderately large, dense off-white head that shows good retention and leaves light lacing on the glass.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity. Rich caramel and toasty malt notes are prominent, intertwined with distinct rye whiskey aromas of spicy grain and sweet vanilla. Subdued hop notes of resinous pine and dried stone fruit linger in the background, complemented by a soft oak woodiness.
Taste. Initial impression is a malty sweetness featuring deep caramel and biscuit. Hop flavors of pine and stone fruit follow but are secondary to the barrel character. Rye whiskey spice, vanilla, and soft wood tannins add complexity. Bitterness is moderate, balancing the strong malt foundation. The finish is long and warming with a lingering caramel and oak aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate. A noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, accompanied by a very slight drying astringency from the oak tannins.
