Oblivion Puigmal is a sophisticated Flanders Red Ale from the Oblivion Barrel Project, showcasing the elegant results of extended maturation. It pours a deep burgundy with exceptional clarity, releasing a complex bouquet of black cherries, red currants, and plums, underscored by a soft, toasty malt sweetness. The palate is defined by a bright, wine-like acidity that dances alongside layers of fruit leather and a subtle hint of oak-derived vanilla. This long-aged ale balances its sharp tartness with a rich, toasted malt backbone, finishing dry and tannic with a lingering, sophisticated fruit complexity reminiscent of a fine vintage red wine.
Appearance. Deep burgundy to reddish-brown (14-17 SRM) with brilliant clarity. Topped by a thin, pale tan head with moderate retention and fine lacing.
Aroma. High intensity fruity-sour profile; dominant notes of black cherry, red currant, and plum. Supportive toasted malt provides a background of bread crust, complemented by a moderate acidic sharpness and a faint whisper of oaky vanilla. No hop aroma.
Taste. Initial sharp, complex sourness followed by rich, toasty malt flavors. Intense flavors of dark stone fruits and orange zest blend with a balanced acetic character. The finish is dry and wine-like, featuring light tannins and a lingering fruity tartness. Bitterness is very low, serving only to support the malt structure.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a prickly, refreshing acidity. Low to moderate carbonation. Noticeable but pleasant tannic astringency provides a structured, crisp mouthfeel. A light, integrated alcohol warmth is present.
