Appearance. Deep mahogany to opaque dark brown with reddish-copper highlights when held to the light. Crowned by a thick, persistent, tan-colored head that leaves moderate lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity of rich maltiness featuring prominent notes of dark chocolate, toasted hazelnuts, and sweet caramel. A clean fermentation profile allows secondary aromas of dried plums and raisins to emerge, alongside a faint hint of molasses. No hop aroma is present.
Taste. Initial malt sweetness leads with flavors of milk chocolate, toffee, and a distinct nutty richness from the hazelnuts. The mid-palate introduces a smooth, Schwarzbier-like roasted grain character that suggests coffee without any burnt or acrid qualities. Bitterness is medium-low, serving only to balance the malt depth. The finish is medium-dry with lingering notes of dark fruit and roasted nuts.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate to medium-high, which provides a mouth-filling sensation and prevents the beer from feeling heavy. A light, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present in the finish.
