Northern Monk
This modern American Pale Ale showcases a vibrant trio of Waimea, Ella, and Strata hops, delivering an expressive bouquet of sweet mandarin citrus and lush tropical passionfruit. Bright pineapple notes emerge early, grounded by a distinctive floral character from the Ella hops and a subtle, resinous dankness from the Strata. A clean, supportive neutral malt base ensures the hop profile remains the centerpiece without being overwhelmed. The palate follows the nose with a burst of stone fruit and citrus, leading into a firm but refined bitterness. It concludes with a crisp, refreshing finish that highlights Northern Monk's signature clean fermentation profile.
Appearance. Pale gold to light amber (approx. 6 SRM). Features a moderately large, creamy white head with excellent retention and fine lacing. Clarity is generally clear to very bright.
Aroma. Moderate-high hop intensity featuring bold tropical fruit (passionfruit, pineapple) and sweet citrus (mandarin). A pronounced floral perfume is present, backed by underlying resinous and dank notes. Low neutral, grainy malt provides a subtle foundation. Clean fermentation with minimal esters.
Taste. Immediate hop-forward impact of mandarin orange and tropical fruits. The floral quality of the Ella hops provides a delicate mid-palate complexity. Moderate bitterness provides structure without being harsh. The malt flavor is restrained and bready, allowing the Strata's dank, berry-like undertones to linger. Finishes medium-dry and clean.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, soft texture. Carbonation is moderate to high, providing a lively prickle on the tongue. Very low alcohol warmth is appropriate for its 5.3% ABV.
