North Riding Brewery Export Stout
This Export Stout, a collaboration with the Independent Salford Beer Festival, delivers an assertive sensory profile true to the Foreign Extra Stout style. At 7% ABV, it strikes a sophisticated balance between high-intensity roast and clean alcohol integration. Deep layers of espresso and dark chocolate dominate the palate, derived from a robust grist of dark roasted malts. Subtle nuances of licorice and black treacle emerge alongside moderate esters reminiscent of plum or raisin. The experience is grounded by a firm bitterness and earthy hop character, culminating in a satisfyingly dry finish that showcases the beer's strength and structural complexity without becoming acrid.
Appearance. Very deep brown to nearly black in color (approximately 35 SRM). The beer is opaque, topped with a voluminous, long-lasting tan head that leaves significant lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity roast aromatics featuring prominent notes of dark chocolate, toasted coffee beans, and scorched grain. A moderate dark fruit ester profile suggests dried currants and raisins, supported by a low, earthy hop presence and a hint of clean alcohol warmth.
Taste. Leading with a rich impression of coffee and bitter chocolate, the flavor follows the roasted aroma without being overly harsh. Medium-high bitterness provides a firm backbone against the malt. Subtle notes of molasses and licorice appear mid-palate, transitioning into a moderately dry, lingering finish with a faint earthy hop flavor and well-integrated alcohol.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate to moderately-high, providing a gentle lift to the palate. A light, pleasant alcohol warmth is present but remains well-integrated.
