North End Brewing Cuvee De Moor

This elevated Belgian Dark Strong Ale presents a profound tapestry of sensory complexity. Deeply influenced by additions of dark sugars and Moroccan fruit, the profile overflows with concentrated notes of medjool dates, dried figs, and caramelized plums. A year in Pinot Noir barrels contributes a sophisticated vinous layer, weaving in toasted oak and red berry undertones. The inclusion of Brettanomyces introduces a subtle leathery and earthy funk that provides a rustic counterpoint to the initial richness. At 13.3% ABV, it is exceptionally warming, balancing its malt-driven sweetness with a dry, tannin-tinged finish that lingers with notes of dark cherry and savory spice.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to coppery-brown with garnet highlights. Features a dense, creamy, light-tan head with moderate retention and fine lacing. Clarity is mostly clear, showing a slight haze from the barrel-aging process.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex blend of bready-toasty malt and dark sugar richness. Prominent dried fruit esters of raisin, fig, and prune are enhanced by specific Moroccan fruit additions. Subtle spicy phenols of black pepper and vanilla mingle with vinous red wine notes and a light earthy, leathery Brettanomyces funk. Alcohol is noticeable but perfumy and well-integrated.
Taste. Initial impression is rich and malty with deep flavors of toffee and dark syrup. Mid-palate reveals intense dried fruit and dark cherry. The Pinot Noir barrel aging adds a layer of oak and dry grape tannins. Bitterness is medium-low, providing just enough structure against the malt. The finish is surprisingly dry for the gravity, assisted by the Brettanomyces character, leaving a lingering aftertaste of spicy alcohol and dark fruit.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full to full body with a creamy, velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate. A significant but smooth alcohol warmth is present, indicative of the high ABV. Very low astringency from barrel tannins adds a pleasant drying sensation.

Behind the walls of several Belgian monasteries there exists a tradition of making strong, dark, rich, fruity beers packed with the flavours and aromas of dark sugar and dried fruit. The strongest of these are often referred to as quadrupels. Our anniversary beer, Cuvée de Moor, takes the dried fruit one stage further and includes a range of Moroccan fruit and dark sugars in the kettle before resting for a year in bretted pinot noir barrels. Raise a glass to our birthday.

13.3% ABV.
