This Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout presents an opulent sensory experience, refined by maturation in oak whiskey barrels. The aroma is a dense tapestry of roasted espresso, dark chocolate, and charred oak, interwoven with hints of vanilla and bourbon. On the palate, the intense bitterness of dark-roasted malts is softened by a velvety, viscous body, revealing layers of black licorice, dried figs, and bittersweet cocoa. The whiskey influence provides a sophisticated warmth and a woody complexity that lingers alongside a persistent, roasty finish. It is a harmonious, powerful beer where the spirited barrel character elevates the classic roast profile to new heights.
Appearance. SRM 40; jet black and completely opaque. It pours with a dense, persistent dark tan head that leaves thick lacing. High viscosity is evident as legs clinging to the glass.
Aroma. High intensity; deep, complex bouquet of espresso and bittersweet chocolate. Strong whiskey-barrel character contributes notes of vanilla, toasted oak, and a hint of bourbon. Moderate esters of raisins and prunes are present, alongside a subtle, resinous hop note and a well-integrated, clean alcohol warmth.
Taste. Initial impression of massive dark-roasted grain, emphasizing espresso and cocoa. Mid-palate reveals complex barrel-derived layers of vanilla and charred wood. Medium-high bitterness balances a rich, malty sweetness. Flavors of black currants and dried fruit emerge before finishing with a lingering, warming, and bittersweet roasted character.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and chewy with a luscious, velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate-low. A smooth, noticeable alcohol warmth is present but remains well-integrated and never becomes harsh or solventy.
