North Coast Brewing Company Barrel-Aged Old Rasputin XXVII

This barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout presents a masterful integration of North Coast’s iconic base beer with charred oak influence. The presence of bourbon barrel aging introduces luxurious layers of sweet vanilla and rich cocoa, weaving seamlessly into the deep roasted grain foundation. Expect an intense sensory journey where the spirit's warmth elevates the classic espresso and dark chocolate profile. The palate is defined by a full-bodied creaminess, delivering a sophisticated interplay of bittersweet roast and spiritous complexity. Each sip concludes with a lingering, velvety warmth, making this a quintessential example of the style refined through patient maturation.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40+ SRM). Renders with a comforting, thick layer of toffee-colored foam with moderate retention and light lacing. Distinct legs are visible on the glass due to high viscosity.
Aroma. High intensity aromatics of roasted coffee and bittersweet chocolate are immediately apparent. The spirit influence is prominent, contributing notes of bourbon, spicy oak, and vanilla. Subtle background esters of dried plum and raisin meld with a faint earthy hop character and a smooth, clean alcohol presence.
Taste. Initial impression is rich and intensely malty, featuring flavors of dark cocoa, espresso, and charred grain. The bourbon barrel contributes complex layers of vanilla and toasted oak. Bitterness is medium-high, providing a firm counterpoint to the malt sweetness and spirit character. The finish is long and bittersweet, with lingering notes of roasted malt and warming bourbon.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant but smooth alcohol warmth provides a tingling heat that is well-integrated and never harsh.

This beer pours jet black with a comforting layer of toffee-colored foam. The warm aromatics of the spirit rises from the glass, carrying roasted notes of bourbon, vanilla, and cocoa. The bourbon character from the barrel-aging gives the beer a full-bodied creaminess and a warm, tingling heat.

The bourbon character from the barrel-aging gives the beer a full-bodied creaminess that coats the mouth with warm, tingling heat. The flavor of the beer is complex. This beer obviously began its life as a stout, full of roasted flavors from the malt, but now carries the complementary sweet flavors of chocolate and vanilla mingled with the bourbon. The beer finishes well with notes of raisins and berry-like fruits.

Prior to 2010, Barrel-Aged Old Rasputin was released in such limited quantities that it was available only at the North Coast Brewing retail shop in Fort Bragg, California. However, we received so many requests for this beer that we began producing enough Barrel-Aged Old Rasputin to put into broader, but still limited, distribution.

North Coast Barrel-Aged Old Rasputin uses Roman and Mayan numerals to indicate the release number.
