This Barrel Aged Imperial Stout presents a masterful synthesis of aggressive roasting and refined wood aging. Deep aromas of espresso and bittersweet chocolate from the roasted malts collide with the rich, spiritous influence of bourbon barrels, offering distinct notes of vanilla, toasted oak, and caramel. On the palate, the intense malt profile delivers complex layers of black licorice and dried figs, supported by a firm hop bitterness that prevents the high gravity from becoming cloying. The high alcohol content provides a sophisticated, creeping warmth that complements the beer’s velvety, chewy texture. It concludes with a lingering, bittersweet finish where charred grain and smooth bourbon character harmoniously endure.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque. Pours with a dense, persistent dark tan head that leaves moderate lacing. High viscosity and alcohol content are apparent through visible legs on the glass (40 SRM).
Aroma. High intensity. Dominant aromas of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and black licorice are layered with significant bourbon barrel character, including vanilla, toasted oak, and a hint of coconut. Moderate esters suggest dried plums and raisins, with a clean, warming alcohol presence.
Taste. Bold initial impression of charred grain and espresso. The mid-palate reveals rich caramel and vanilla sweetness from the oak aging, balancing the aggressive roasted malt bitterness. Complex flavors of dark fruit and molasses emerge before a long, warming finish that remains bittersweet and smooth.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied with a thick, chewy, and velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, enhancing the creaminess. A significant but smooth alcohol warmth is felt in the throat, characteristic of its high gravity, with no harsh astringency.

This beer obviously began its life as a stout, full of roasted flavors from the malt, but now carries the complementary sweet flavors of chocolate and vanilla mingled with the bourbon. Prior to 2010, Barrel-Aged Old Rasputin was released in such limited quantities that it was available only at the North Coast Brewing retail shop in Fort Bragg, California. However, we received so many requests for this beer that we began producing enough Barrel-Aged Old Rasputin to put into broader, but still limited, distribution.
