Norm Brewing Northern Lights
Northern Lights is an explosive Triple IPA that captures a vivid spectrum of southern hemisphere fruit. The prominent use of Nectaron and Rakau hops creates a lush, saturated profile of ripe apricot, peach, and sun-drenched pineapple. Subtle notes of pear and plum emerge from the Rakau Sub Zero, while a touch of Citra adds layers of mango and bright grapefruit. Despite its 9.5% ABV, the malt remains a clean, supportive backdrop, allowing the hop oils to dominate. The sensory experience is intensely fruity and clean, finishing with a smooth, well-integrated warmth that balances its bold, tropical complexity.
Appearance. Pale orange to deep gold (SRM 7-9) with a dense, creamy, off-white head that shows excellent persistence and lacing. The beer is opaque and hazy, characteristic of the modern New England approach to the style.
Aroma. High to intense hop aroma featuring a complex blend of passion fruit, peach, and grapefruit. Distinctive stone fruit notes of apricot and plum are prominent, supported by tropical mango and a hint of pear. Malt character is low and neutral, while fermentation esters are restrained and fruity.
Taste. Dominant hop flavors of pineapple, nectarine, and citrus zest. The bitterness is moderately high but remains smooth and integrated rather than harsh. A clean, bready malt presence provides a soft foundation. The finish is medium-dry with a lingering, resinous fruit skin aftertaste and a well-hidden but warming alcohol presence.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a soft, rounded, and creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate. A smooth, noticeable alcohol warmth is present without being solventy or hot. No significant hop-derived astringency.
