Handsome Stout is a commanding, high-gravity interpretation of an American Stout, bridging the gap toward an imperial profile. An intense aromatic profile of freshly ground coffee and bittersweet dark chocolate is punctuated by resiny, citrus-forward American hops. The palate is defined by a deep, roasted grain character—evoking charred toast and cocoa—balanced by a firm, assertive bitterness. Despite its potent 10% ABV strength, the mouthfeel remains creamy and well-structured, finishing with a lingering, smooth alcohol warmth and a resinous hop snap. This collaboration between Newbarns and Lervig showcases a sophisticated balance between aggressive roasting and vibrant hop expression.

Appearance. Jet black (40+ SRM) and completely opaque. Pours with a large, persistent, deep tan head that displays excellent retention and leaves thick lacing on the glass.

Aroma. High intensity with a dominant roasted coffee and dark chocolate malt character. Prominent American hop aromas of pine resin and pithy citrus. Subtle dark fruit esters and a noticeable but smooth alcohol presence.

Taste. Initial impression of bittersweet chocolate and heavily roasted coffee beans. Low malt sweetness is quickly overtaken by a firm, aggressive hop bitterness and resiny hop flavors. Clean fermentation with a dry, slightly charred finish and a lingering cocoa aftertaste.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and creamy with a velvety, viscous texture. Moderate-high carbonation provides necessary lift against the malt weight. Significant but smooth alcohol warmth is present without being harsh or fusel.

When we had Dave over from Lervig last month, we couldn’t let him go without making another little something to enjoy now and to tuck a portion of it away into barrels for a later date. This seems to be a bit of a growing tradition with our Nordic collaborations… and I like it!

Handsome Stout is a thick and oozy 10% stout, lots of liquorice notes with a sweet malty mouthfeel to round it off. Half of it packaged for enjoying now and the rest is now aging in a blend of different barrels and octaves.
