Nerdbrewing’s Increment is a gargantuan Imperial Stout that pushes the boundaries of the style with its 16% ABV. This non-adjunct expression relies on a heavy addition of oatmeal to create a luxurious, motor-oil-like viscosity. The sensory profile is dominated by deep layers of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and molasses, accented by dark fruit esters like dried figs and raisins. Despite its significant strength, the alcohol manifests as a smooth, vinous warmth rather than a sharp burn. The absence of adjuncts allows the pure roasted malt character to shine, delivering a complex, lingering finish of charred grain and dark sugar.

Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque. Pours with a thick, mocha-colored head that shows moderate retention before settling into a persistent collar. High viscosity is evident through heavy, slow-moving legs on the glass.

Aroma. High intensity. Dominant aromas of dark chocolate, heavily roasted coffee, and burnt sugar. Moderate esters suggesting prunes and black currants. A distinct but smooth alcohol presence provides a port-like, vinous quality. Subtle earthy hop notes are buried beneath the malt.

Taste. Initial impression is intensely sweet and rich. Flavors of cocoa nibs, espresso, and blackstrap molasses lead the way, supported by a significant oatmeal-driven creaminess. The roast bitterness is firm but balanced by the high residual sugar, ensuring it is not syrupy. Mid-palate reveals dark fruit notes of raisin and fig. The finish is long and warming with a lingering bittersweet chocolate aftertaste.
