The sensory journey begins with an intense bouquet of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and deep notes of black cherry and toasted figs. On the palate, a complex layering of charred grain and dark cocoa is balanced by a firm, resinous bitterness that prevents the malt depth from becoming cloying. As it warms, subtle nuances of black licorice and a gentle, spirit-like warmth emerge, leading into a lingering finish of roasted malt and dark fruit. Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40+ SRM). It pours with a thick, dense, dark tan head that shows moderate retention and leaves significant oily legs on the glass, hinting at its high viscosity.
Aroma. High intensity; rich aromas of dark chocolate, heavily roasted coffee, and slight molasses. Moderate esters suggesting dried prunes and raisins are present, alongside a very low earthy hop note and a clean, well-integrated alcohol warmth.
Taste. Deeply complex; initial flavors of burnt sugar and dark cocoa give way to a mid-palate of dried black currants and espresso. Firm bitterness provides a sturdy backbone against the rich maltiness. The finish is long and warming with a lingering bittersweet chocolate aftertaste.
