Basalt is a formidable Imperial Stout, defined by its intensive twelve-month maturation in a trio of Islay, Speyside, and Bourbon barrels. The sensory profile is a deep exploration of roasted grains and complex barrel spirits. Expect a profound aromatic interplay of dark chocolate and espresso, underscored by the medicinal peat smoke of Islay and the rich vanilla-caramel sweetness characteristic of Bourbon. The addition of oats and lactose creates a viscous, velvety texture that carries notes of charred oak and a distinctive maritime salinity. This is a massive, warming, and sophisticated beer with a lingering, sweet, and smoky finish.

Appearance. Jet black and opaque (40+ SRM). Pours with a thick, dense, dark tan head that shows moderate retention, eventually fading to a creamy ring and leaving oily legs on the glass indicative of high viscosity.

Aroma. Intense and multi-layered. Primary aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, and heavy-roasted coffee are present. Barrel aging contributes distinct peat smoke, earthy iodine, and a hint of salinity from the Islay casks, balanced by sweet vanilla, coconut, and toasted oak from the Speyside and Bourbon influence. Subdued dark fruit esters like raisins and prunes emerge as the beer warms.

Taste. Rich and assertive initial flavors of bittersweet chocolate and espresso lead into a complex mid-palate of smoky peat and sweet woodiness. Lactose provides a creamy sweetness that balances the firm roasted bitterness and high alcohol. Faint saline notes enhance the savory depth. The finish is long and warming, with a lingering interplay of charred oak, caramel, and a gentle, integrated alcohol heat.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied, thick, and chewy with a luscious, velvety texture provided by the oats and lactose. Carbonation is low to moderate, maintaining the beer's significant weight. A noticeable but smooth alcohol warmth is present throughout.
