This is a textural masterpiece, emphasizing the harmony between scorched earth bitterness and rich, spirit-forward sweetness.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40+ SRM). Pours with a thick, persistent deep tan head that leaves dense, oily lacing. Visible viscosity in the glass creates slow-moving legs due to the high alcohol and extract content.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex bouquet of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and black licorice. The Rye Whisky aging is prominent, adding layers of spicy rye grain, toasted vanilla, and charred oak. Low dark fruit esters resembling prunes and raisins emerge as it warms, alongside a clean, noticeable alcohol presence.
Taste. Initial impression is of decadent dark cocoa and burnt malt. The mid-palate introduces sharp spicy notes from the Rye Whisky barrels, complemented by caramel and toasted bread. Medium-high bitterness from both hops and roast prevents the beer from becoming cloying, leading to a moderately sweet, spirit-forward finish. Elements of black currant and fig mingle with a lingering char and wood-tannin complexity.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied and chewy with a velvet-like, syrupy texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, enhancing the luscious weight on the tongue. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated, providing a comforting glow without harshness.
