Mulhac)n Black presents as a focused Foreign Extra Stout that belies its lower alcohol content with a complex grain bill of five distinct malts. The sensory experience is dominated by a deep-set roasted character, evoking notes of dark chocolate and fresh coffee grounds without becoming overly astringent. Three varieties of hops contribute a balanced herbal and earthy undertone that supports the roast. Despite its dark, opaque appearance, it remains approachable, offering a moderately dry finish and a subtle fruitiness that bridges the gap between traditional British stouts and modern craft interpretations.
Appearance. Very deep brown to near-black (35 SRM). Clear but mostly opaque due to the depth of color. Topped with a persistent, dense tan head that exhibits good retention and leaves moderate lacing.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity roast, reminiscent of dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans. Low fruity esters suggesting dried plum or prune. A faint, earthy and floral hop character is present in the background. Clean fermentation profile without diacetyl.
Taste. Initial flavors of toasted bread and bittersweet chocolate, transitioning into a more intense roasted coffee character. Medium-high bitterness derived from both the dark grains and hops. The finish is moderately dry with a lingering cocoa powder and lightly burnt grain aftertaste. Low herbal hop flavor.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Moderate carbonation provides a gentle prickle on the tongue. Very low alcohol warmth, consistent with its sessionable strength despite the style designation.
