This Foreign Extra Stout offers a velvety sensory experience, utilizing seven specialty barleys and a trio of oats to create a luxurious, roast velvet texture. The clean profile of Nottingham Ale Yeast allows deep layers of dark chocolate, treacle, and caramel to take center stage. While traditional Goldings hops provide a classic earthy bitterness, the addition of Wai-Iti hops introduces a modern New Zealand twist of subtle stone fruit. It balances the assertive roast character expected of the style with a remarkably smooth, creamy finish, delivering a complex interplay of cocoa and soft fruit aromatics.
Appearance. Very deep brown to opaque black (35-40 SRM). Large, persistent tan head with dense lacing. Opaque clarity.
Aroma. Moderate to high roast intensity. Rich dark chocolate and treacle malt character with light caramel notes. Low earthy Goldings hop character with a faint stone fruit and citrus note from Wai-Iti. Low esters from Nottingham Ale Yeast; clean fermentation.
Taste. Initial impression of smooth cocoa and sweet treacle. Strong roasted malt flavor reminiscent of coffee and burnt grain, balanced by moderate bitterness. Light peach and apricot hop flavor from Wai-Iti. Moderately dry finish with lingering chocolate and caramel. High complexity.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body. Moderate carbonation. Low alcohol warmth. Exceptional creaminess from the use of oats. No astringency.
