This Imperial Flanders Red Ale is a masterful hybrid, blurring the line between a complex Belgian sour and a Tokaji Aszú wine. Aged for two years in aszú barrels on hand-picked grapes, it offers a profound sensory journey. High-intensity aromas of dried apricot, honey, and brandy-like warmth mingle with the funky, rustic character derived from Brettanomyces and Lactobacillus. The palate is rich with toasty malts and deep vinous notes of red currant and cherry, layered with distinctive walnut and almond nuances from the wood. Despite its staggering 13.7% ABV, the warmth is expertly integrated, finishing with a dry, tannic, and sophisticated wine-like elegance.
Appearance. Deep reddish-brown to burgundy (SRM 15-17) with excellent clarity from two years of maturation. The off-white to pale tan head is fine-beaded but displays moderate to low retention, typical for high-gravity and acidic sour ales.
Aroma. High intensity; a complex bouquet of dried apricot, honeyed botrytis, and brandy-soaked raisins. Supportive toasty malt is present, alongside moderate acetic and lactic acidity. Distinctive funky esters and earthy, peppery phenols from Brettanomyces provide a lambic-like depth with a subtle vanilla undertone.
Taste. Initially rich and malty with a soft, toasty backbone, followed by an explosion of stone fruit—notably dried apricot, plum, and red currant. Complex, moderately high acidity provides a sharp, wine-like structure. The mid-palate reveals nutty almond and walnut character from the Tokaji barrels. The finish is deceptively dry and tannic, reminiscent of a high-acid Burgundy, with lingering honeyed fruit and gentle acetic notes.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body, providing a more substantial weight than standard examples. Carbonation is low to moderate. Pronounced yet well-integrated alcohol warmth is present. A prickly acidity and moderate tannic astringency from the oak and grapes provide a clean, structured finish.
