This Double IPA from Monkish Brewing Co. presents a saturated hop profile, leveraging an intensive double dry-hopping of Citra, Idaho 7, and Enigma. The aroma is an explosion of tropical fruit and resinous pine, leading into a palate defined by bright grapefruit, stone fruit, and nuanced berry notes. While the bitterness is firm, the malt backbone remains supportive and clean, allowing the complex hop oils to dominate. Citra provides a sharp citrus edge, while Idaho 7 adds a depth of black tea and pine, and Enigma offers a unique vinous, red-fruit character. The finish is remarkably smooth for its strength, ending with a lingering, resinous dryness.
Appearance. Gold to light orange (6-10 SRM). Features a persistent, creamy, off-white head with excellent lacing. While the style allows for clarity, this DDH version displays a significant, characteristic haze.
Aroma. Intense hop aroma with prominent Citra-driven grapefruit and lime. Idaho 7 adds resinous pine and ripe peach, while Enigma contributes red currant and melon. Background malt is neutral and crackery; fermentation is clean with very low fruity esters and a subtle, clean alcohol note.
Taste. Initial impression is a wave of bold citrus and tropical fruit from Citra and Enigma. The mid-palate reveals Idaho 7’s herbal and stone fruit complexity. High bitterness is well-integrated and lacks harshness. Malt is soft and supportive, reminiscent of white bread. The finish is dry to medium-dry with a long-lasting resinous and berry-like hop aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a soft, smooth texture. Medium carbonation. Noticeable but well-restrained alcohol warmth. No hop-derived astringency, maintaining high drinkability despite the intensity.
