Large Shadows is a massive Double IPA that pushes the boundaries of hop saturation and alcohol strength. The presence of Galaxy hops from Australia drives an intense bouquet of passion fruit and zesty citrus, while New Zealand Rakau hops provide a deep counterpoint of ripe apricot and orchard fruits. A subtle resinous pine note anchors the tropical profile. Despite the 10.1% ABV, the malt remains a clean, supportive backdrop, allowing the complex hop oils to dominate. This beer delivers a bold, warming experience with a smooth, velvety texture and a finish defined by lingering stone fruit and a firm, clean bitterness.
Appearance. Deep gold to pale orange (8 SRM) with a significant, persistent white head. Characteristic soft haze from heavy dry-hopping, though still retaining a luminous quality.
Aroma. Intense hop aroma featuring heavy hits of passion fruit and peach from the Galaxy hops, supported by apricot, plum, and a hint of pear from the Rakau additions. Background notes of pine resin and a very light, clean, bready malt sweetness. Alcohol is noticeable as a floral, spicy warmth.
Taste. The initial impression is a burst of tropical fruit and stone fruit. Mid-palate reveals layers of nectarine, passion fruit, and a touch of resinous spice. Bitterness is high but well-integrated, lacking any harsh hop bite. The malt provides a soft, doughy support without cloying sweetness. Finishes medium-dry with a long, fruit-forward aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a creamy, smooth texture. Carbonation is moderate, contributing to a soft palate. A distinct but gentle alcohol warmth is present, reflecting the 10.1% strength without being solventy.
