Conscience Be Free is a powerful Double IPA that showcases the signature Monkish approach to hop saturation. The double dry-hopped profile leads with an explosive bouquet of tropical passionfruit from Galaxy and the distinct crushed white grape character of Nelson. Simcoe provides a grounding layer of bright pine and grapefruit zest. Despite its 8.5% ABV, the beer maintains a soft, pillowy texture that carries layers of pineapple, mango, and gooseberry across the palate. It avoids the heavy sweetness of a barleywine, finishing with a restrained bitterness and a clean, lingering resonance of citrus oils and exotic fruit.
Appearance. Pale orange-gold (7 SRM) with a dense, creamy, persistent white head and significant lacing. The body exhibits a pronounced, uniform haze.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring prominent notes of passionfruit, ripe mango, and gooseberry. Secondary notes of pine resin and citrus zest are present. Malt is clean and neutral, suggesting light cracker, while fermentation esters are low and peach-like.
Taste. Initial impression of tropical fruit juice followed by complex layers of white grape, dank pine, and grapefruit. Malt flavor is low, providing a soft bready backbone. Bitterness is firm but rounded and smooth, never harsh. The finish is medium-dry with a long, resinous, fruity aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a soft, pillowy, and creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate. A light, smooth alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated, with no hop-derived astringency.
