Monkish Axle is a profoundly saturated Double IPA that pushes the boundaries of intensity. A triple dry-hopped profile unleashes a tidal wave of tropical aromatics, led by the citrus-forward punch of Citra and the pungent passionfruit and peach notes of Galaxy. Motueka adds a distinctive layer of crushed lime and mojito-like freshness. Despite its staggering strength, the malt remains a clean, grainy backdrop, allowing the massive hop saturation to dominate. The sensory experience is dense and resinous, finishing with a smooth but unavoidable alcohol warmth that balances the assertive, firm bitterness and lush, fruit-driven complexity of this high-gravity ale.
Appearance. Deep gold to pale orange (7-10 SRM) with a distinct, opaque haze. Thick, creamy off-white head with excellent retention and heavy, persistent lacing.
Aroma. High intensity. Bold layers of ripe pineapple, passionfruit, and mango from Galaxy and Citra, complemented by a zesty lime and tropical citrus burst from Motueka. Background of neutral, bready malt with a clean fermentation profile and a noticeable but pleasant ethanol sweetness.
Taste. Explosive hop flavors mirror the aroma, featuring nectarine, grapefruit, and key lime pie. Initial sweetness is quickly countered by a firm, resinous bitterness that is assertive but not harsh. The malt character is minimal and soft, providing structure for the massive hop oils. Finishes medium-dry with a long, lingering tropical and pithy aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and viscous with a smooth, velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate. Significant but well-integrated alcohol warmth is present without being solventy. Low hop-derived astringency despite the massive saturation.
