Mills Brewing Old Heavy

Old Heavy presents a sophisticated tapestry of British brewing heritage and barrel-aging artistry. This British Strong Ale, crafted via a traditional turbid mash of dark roasted and crystal malts, offers a deep, multi-layered sensory profile. The maturation in red Burgundy barrels infuses the blend with vibrant notes of red fruit and subtle spice, while the influence of Islay whisky barrels introduces a delicate whisper of maritime peat smoke and sea spray. The use of aged hops provides a structural, earthy bitterness that balances the inherent malty richness. After ten months of bottle conditioning, it emerges as a complex, elegantly integrated ale with a dry, lingering finish.
Appearance. Deep reddish-brown with garnet highlights (SRM 20). The head is tan, fine-textured, and shows moderate retention. The beer has a slight haze consistent with its turbid mash origin and bottle conditioning.
Aroma. High intensity. Rich aromas of toffee and toasted nuts from crystal malts are layered with dried cherries and vinous red fruit. A subtle but distinct thread of maritime peat smoke and iodine provides a phenolic counterpoint. Low earthy hop character is present alongside faint spicy yeast esters.
Taste. Initial impression of rich, toasted malt and burnt sugar. The mid-palate reveals dark fruit complexity, including raisin and plum, accentuated by light red wine tannins. The Islay influence adds a light smokiness and a savory, saline edge. Bitterness is moderate and firm, driven by aged hops, providing a clean balance to the malt weight. The finish is medium-dry and lingering with a final echo of wood spice.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, slightly chewy texture. Carbonation is moderate-low, providing a soft palate. A gentle, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present without any harshness or astringency.
