Milky Road Brewery Groundbock Day
Groundbock Day is a decadent Doppelbock that emphasizes the "extra heavy" nature of the style with an 8.5% ABV punch. It pours a deep mahogany with brilliant ruby highlights and a creamy, tan head. The sensory experience is dominated by a rich Munich malt presence, evoking aromas of toasted crusts, dark fruit leather, and a whisper of cocoa. On the palate, deeply developed Maillard products offer flavors of dark caramel and toasted nuts, balanced by a gentle, spicy noble hop bitterness. The mouthfeel is luxuriously full and smooth, featuring a clean lager finish with a sophisticated, lingering alcohol warmth.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark brown with brilliant ruby highlights. Large, creamy, off-white to light tan head with excellent persistence and lacing.
Aroma. High intensity of rich, toasted malt and deeply developed Maillard products. Notes of toasted bread crust, dark honey, and hints of chocolate. Moderate dark fruit esters reminiscent of plum and prune. Very low spicy hop aroma with a noticeable but well-integrated alcohol presence.
Taste. Initial impression is intensely malty and rich. Dominant flavors of toasted grain, Munich malt, and light caramel. Very low hop bitterness allows a malty sweetness to prevail, though the finish is moderately dry and not cloying. Notes of dark fruit and toasted nuts persist into the aftertaste. Clean fermentation character.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full to full body with a smooth, velvety texture. Moderate-low carbonation. A noticeable, pleasant alcohol warmth is present without being hot or harsh. No astringency.
