Mikkeller’s Oktoberpretzel reimagines the classic Märzen by infusing the traditional amber lager with a whimsical addition of pretzels. The experience is defined by a deep, elegant Munich malt foundation, offering rich layers of toasted bread crust and warm dough. This malty core is uniquely accented by the savory, slightly sourdough-like presence of the pretzels, which enhances the perception of baked grain without overwhelming the clean lager finish. Subtle spicy hops provide just enough balance to ensure the palate remains crisp. It is a harmonious marriage of old-world German craftsmanship and playful modern brewing, delivering a smooth, medium-bodied celebration of the harvest season.
Appearance. Deep amber-orange with copper highlights (12-14 SRM). Displays brilliant clarity and is topped with a persistent, creamy, off-white foam stand that leaves fine lacing.
Aroma. Moderate malty aroma of rich bread crust and toasted Munich malt. A unique, savory doughiness from the pretzels is present, alongside a very low spicy hop note. Fermentation is exceptionally clean with no esters or diacetyl.
Taste. Initial impression is of rich, complex maltiness featuring bready and toasty flavors. The addition of pretzels contributes a subtle mineral salinity and a sourdough-bread quality. Hop bitterness is moderate and supportive, providing balance to the malty palate without adding significant flavor. The finish is moderately dry with lingering notes of elegant toasted grain.
Mouthfeel. Medium-bodied with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate, and the 5.8% ABV provides a very faint, well-integrated warmth. Free of any harsh astringency.
