Appearance. Opaque, deep ebony to black (SRM 40). Topped with a thick, persistent tan head that leaves dense lacing.
Aroma. High intensity aroma of freshly ground dark-roast coffee and espresso. Supporting notes of milk chocolate, cocoa powder, and a distinct creamy sweetness from the lactose. Hop aroma is absent, and fermentation character is clean with no significant esters.
Taste. Initial impression of sweet cream and roasted coffee. Malt flavors of dark chocolate, espresso, and toasted bread crusts are prominent. The lactose provides a significant but balanced sweetness that rounds out the roasted bitterness. Hop bitterness is moderate, providing enough structure to prevent the finish from being cloying. The aftertaste is long, featuring lingering notes of mocha and roasted malt.
