Mikkeller’s Foret De Troncais Light Toasted is a monumental expression of the American Barleywine style, elevated by aging in light-toasted French Oak from the Troncais forest. At a formidable 19.3% ABV, the beer pours a deep copper with brilliant clarity and thick, viscous legs. The sensory profile is dominated by a rich, bready malt foundation and assertive resinous hops, seamlessly integrated with the delicate vanilla and almond nuances of the Troncais wood. Each sip delivers a velvety, full-bodied texture with a potent yet smooth alcohol warmth, balanced by firm bitterness and lingering notes of dried fruit and toasted grain.
Appearance.Color is deep copper to light brown (17-18 SRM). The off-white head is moderately small with low retention, exhibiting significant lacing and viscous legs. Clarity is brilliant.
Aroma.High intensity. Rich toasty and bready malt richness leads, followed by assertive resinous and citrusy hop character. The light-toasted French Oak contributes elegant notes of vanilla, cedar, and subtle spice. Moderate fruity esters of apricot and pear are present alongside a prominent, clean alcohol aroma.
Taste.Initial impression is a massive, malty sweetness reminiscent of toasted bread and light caramel. This is countered by a firm, moderately high hop bitterness. Hop flavors of grapefruit and pine mingle with the subtle tannins and woody spice of the Troncais oak. The finish is long and warming, balancing residual sweetness with a drying, hoppy persistence.
Mouthfeel.Full-bodied and chewy with a luscious, velvety texture. Carbonation is low. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is very noticeable but remains well-integrated. Very low astringency from the oak adds structure.
