Appearance. Jet black and opaque (40 SRM). It pours with a thick, persistent, deep tan head that exhibits excellent retention and leaves heavy lacing on the glass. Significant legs are visible upon swirling, indicating high viscosity.
Aroma. High intensity with a rich blend of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and charred grain. Distinctive notes of vanilla bean and the spicy, almond-like aroma of Tonka beans are prominent. Subtle buttery caramel and a hint of salinity are present, alongside low dark fruit esters of prune and fig.
Taste. Initial impression is a massive wave of dark chocolate and roasted malt. The mid-palate features luscious salted caramel and creamy vanilla, balanced by the woodsy spice of Tonka. Hop bitterness is firm and serves to offset the residual sugars, while the cacao nibs provide a lingering, pleasant bitterness in the finish. Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and chewy with a luscious, velvety, and nearly syrupy texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A smooth, gentle alcohol warmth is clearly present but well-integrated, providing a soothing throat feel without harshness.
