McLeod’s White Sand is a luminous White IPA that masterfully bridges the gap between a Belgian Witbier and a modern American IPA. Utilizing a base of Belgian Pilsner malt supplemented by oats and wheat, it presents a pillowy-soft texture that carries its high hop intensity. The Citra and Lemon Drop hops drive a vibrant citrus profile of lemon zest and grapefruit, which merges seamlessly with the fruity esters and delicate spice of the Belgian Wit yeast. Refreshingly complex, the palate balances bright hop character with a subtle, refreshing tartness and a clean, light finish that transcends the mundane.
Appearance. Pale straw to light gold (4-6 SRM). Noticeably hazy to opaque due to the high protein content of wheat and oats. Dense, frothy white head with excellent retention and lacing.
Aroma. High intensity citrus-forward aroma featuring prominent lemon zest, grapefruit, and a hint of melon from Lemon Drop and Citra hops. These are complemented by Belgian yeast esters of orange peel and a whisper of clove-like phenol. Low bready, wheaty malt character in the background.
Taste. Initial impression is bright citrus, specifically lemon and lime pith. The middle features bready Belgian Pilsner malt and soft wheat flavors, balanced by moderate-high bitterness. Belgian yeast contributes esters of pear and a light spicy finish. The aftertaste is dry, crisp, and slightly tart without being harsh.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with a characteristic soft, creamy mouthfeel derived from the addition of oats. High carbonation provides a refreshing, effervescent prickle. Very light alcohol warmth is well-integrated.
