Matchless Brewing’s Strata Fresh is a vibrant Hazy IPA that celebrates the harvest with 600 lbs of fresh Strata hops from Roy Farms. A base of Pilsner malt, Flaked Wheat, and Flaked Oats provides a plush, hazy foundation for an explosive aromatic profile of zesty lemon, lime, and mixed berries. On the palate, the fresh-hop influence manifests as unique notes of prickly pear and a "green garden" freshness, characteristic of undried cones. The soft, pillowy texture balances a restrained bitterness, finishing with a lingering botanical brightness that underscores the seasonal intent of this Pacific Northwest hop artist's creation.
Appearance. Straw to light gold (4 SRM) with a heavy, opaque haze that creates a luminous shine. Topped by a dense, white, meringue-like head with excellent retention and thick, sculpted lacing.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma dominated by fresh Strata character, featuring sharp lemon and lime zest alongside a sweet berry medley. The malt presents a clean, bready, and lightly grainy backdrop from the Pilsner and flaked grains. A subtle green, resinous quality from the fresh hop addition is present, complemented by neutral fermentation esters.
Taste. Bold fruity hop flavors lead with distinctive prickly pear and bright citrus. The mid-palate reveals a green garden herbal quality indicative of the fresh-hop process. Low to medium-high bitterness is present but feels soft and well-integrated against the bready malt base. The finish is smooth and off-dry, leaving a lingering impression of fresh botanicals and citrus without any hop burn or harshness.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a soft, pillowy mouthfeel provided by the flaked oats and wheat. Carbonation is moderate, contributing to a smooth, creamy texture. No astringency or harshness; a very light, well-integrated alcohol warmth is barely perceptible.
