This decadent Imperial Stout presents a lush sensory experience inspired by a confectionary river. The aroma is dominated by intense cacao nibs and rich vanilla beans, layered over a complex base of roasted malts and dark chocolate. Aging in Westward Whiskey barrels imparts sophisticated notes of charred oak and caramel-laden spirits. On the palate, the blend of oatmeal and milk stout bases creates a velvety, full-bodied texture that carries flavors of chocolate fudge, espresso, and dark dried fruits. A smooth, warming finish reveals a well-integrated alcohol presence, balanced by a gentle bitterness and a lingering, creamy sweetness that evokes a high-end chocolate bar.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (SRM 40+). Pours with a thick, dense, dark tan head that shows moderate retention and leaves viscous legs on the glass, indicative of its high gravity and alcohol content.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex layering of dark chocolate, cocoa, and espresso. The Westward Whiskey barrels provide a distinct spirit-forward character with notes of toasted oak, vanilla, and caramel. Low esters of prune and raisin are present, while hop aroma is absent, allowing the adjuncts and malt to lead.
Taste. An initial impression of rich chocolate fudge and sweet vanilla. The mid-palate reveals deep roasted malt flavors of coffee and scorched grain, supported by a moderate bitterness that prevents the beer from becoming cloying. The barrel aging adds a sophisticated dry oak and whiskey warmth. The finish is long and lingering, transitioning from a creamy sweetness to a pleasant, bittersweet cocoa aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied and chewy with a velvety, luscious texture enhanced by the addition of oats and lactose. Carbonation is low to moderate. A smooth, gentle alcohol warmth is noticeable but well-integrated, with no astringency despite the heavy roast profile.
