Marina The Grim North, a rare 2011 collaboration with Steel City Brewery, is a refined Specialty IPA that masterfully balances the darkness of a stout with the aggressive hop profile of a West Coast IPA. At 7% ABV, it delivers a high-intensity sensory experience led by resinous pine and citrus hop characters. These sharp notes are softened by a supportive malt backbone of light chocolate and toasted bread, derived from debittered malts to avoid burnt harshness. The result is a smooth, complex ale where the hop-forward bitterness remains the focal point, finishing dry and clean while showcasing the best of this Black IPA variation.
Appearance.Opaque deep black (SRM 38) with a creamy, persistent tan head that leaves significant lacing. Despite its darkness, the liquid maintains a clear, non-murky consistency.
Aroma.High intensity hop aroma dominated by resinous pine, grapefruit peel, and subtle tropical fruit. A low but present malt character provides notes of light chocolate and toasted grain, supported by a clean fermentation profile.
Taste.Initial hop-forward impression of pine and citrus pith, followed by a firm, assertive bitterness characteristic of a high-IBU IPA. The malt flavor is restrained, offering hints of coffee and cocoa without any ashy or burnt qualities. It finishes dry and clean with a lingering hop bitterness and a whisper of dark malt.
Mouthfeel.Medium-bodied with a smooth, almost velvety texture. Moderate carbonation provides a crisp mouthfeel, while a light, well-integrated alcohol warmth emerges on the finish.
