Gate No1/2022 is a monumental Imperial Stout that showcases the transformative power of its fourteen-month rest in Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels. The sensory profile is defined by an interplay of intensely roasted malts and the deep, sweet complexity of seasoned oak. Decadent notes of bittersweet chocolate and espresso are layered with barrel-derived nuances of rich vanilla, toffee, and charred wood. This barrel-aged expression offers a sophisticated balance between the raw power of a thick, dark malt base and the elegant, warming spirit of the bourbon, resulting in a harmonious and profoundly deep experience that lingers long after each sip.
Appearance.Jet black and completely opaque (40+ SRM). It pours with a thick, dense, dark tan head that exhibits moderate retention and leaves significant oily legs on the glass, indicating high viscosity and alcohol content.
Aroma.High intensity and deeply complex. Dominant aromas of dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, and black licorice are intertwined with prominent Buffalo Trace bourbon notes of vanilla, toasted coconut, and spicy oak. Low esters of dried figs and prunes are present, with the alcohol providing a clean, pleasant warmth without being solventy.
Taste. The initial impression is one of immense richness, featuring flavors of dark cocoa and burnt sugar. The mid-palate introduces the barrel character, with layers of caramel, bourbon, and a hint of pipe tobacco. Bitterness is moderate to firm, derived from both roasted grains and hops to balance the residual sweetness. The finish is long and bittersweet, leaving an aftertaste of espresso and warming bourbon.
Mouthfeel.Very full-bodied and viscous with a chewy, velvety texture. Carbonation is low, enhancing the luxurious weight on the palate. A smooth, gentle alcohol warmth is noticeable and well-integrated, providing a soothing glow rather than a harsh burn.
