This imposing Imperial Stout, aged for fourteen months in Woodford Reserve Bourbon barrels, pours a viscous, midnight black with a dense, mocha head. The aroma is a complex tapestry of rich dark chocolate, roasted espresso, and prominent oak-derived vanilla, layered with toasted coconut and a distinct, warming bourbon spirit note. On the palate, a thick and velvety texture delivers deep flavors of molasses, bittersweet cocoa, and dark dried fruits like figs and raisins. Harmonious barrel tannins and a smooth, alcohol warmth balance the decadent sweetness, leading to a long, sophisticated, and bittersweet finish.
Appearance. Opaque, jet black (SRM 40) with deep reddish-brown highlights at the edges. Dense, thick, dark brown head with moderate retention, leaving prominent legs on the glass upon swirling due to high viscosity and alcohol content.
Aroma. High intensity. Deeply roasted malt aromas of espresso, dark chocolate, and charred grain are seamlessly blended with prominent bourbon barrel characteristics: rich vanilla, toasted oak, sweet caramel, and a hint of coconut. Moderate esters of dark fruits, specifically prunes and black currants, complement a clean, warming alcohol presence. Hop aroma is not detected.
Taste. Rich and intense initial impression of bittersweet chocolate and dark roast coffee, closely followed by bourbon-derived caramel, vanilla, and oak. Moderate hop bitterness is well-integrated, balancing the substantial residual malt sweetness. The mid-palate reveals complex notes of molasses, dark raisins, and a touch of black licorice. The finish is moderately sweet yet balanced by oak tannins and warming alcohol, leaving a lingering, complex aftertaste of roasted grain and sweet bourbon.
Mouthfeel. Extremely full-bodied, thick, and chewy with a velvety, luscious, and coating texture. Carbonation is low. A smooth, gentle, yet distinctly warming alcohol presence is noticeable and well-integrated. No harshness or astringency, though a light oak dryness is present.
