Planet Iommia is an assertive Hazy Double IPA that showcases a potent hop blend of Chinook, Strata, Strata CGX, and Columbus. It opens with an intense sensory bouquet of resinous pine and dank earthiness driven by Columbus and Chinook, quickly countered by the vibrant tropical notes of passionfruit and ripe strawberry from the Strata and Strata CGX additions. The mouthfeel is plush and smooth, supporting a rich, hop-saturated profile without becoming cloying. A clean, supportive malt base provides a neutral canvas for the complex interplay of citrus zest and forest floor aromatics, finishing with a well-integrated alcohol warmth characteristic of its strength.
Appearance. Deep gold to pale orange with a distinct, opaque haze. Topped by a dense, rocky, white head with excellent retention and significant lacing.
Aroma. High intensity aromatics lead with pungent resin, dank herbs, and cracked black pepper from Columbus and Chinook. This is layered over a core of sweet tropical fruit, specifically passionfruit and candied berries, courtesy of Strata. Minimal grainy malt presence in the background with a clean fermentation profile.
Taste. The initial impression is a burst of citrus oil and pine needles, followed by a mid-palate dominated by the complex fruit character of Strata, ranging from grapefruit to strawberry. Bitterness is firm but smooth, avoiding harshness despite the high hop load. A very low bready malt character supports the finish, which is medium-dry with a lingering resinous aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a soft, creamy texture. Moderate carbonation provides a gentle lift. Noticeable but smooth alcohol warmth is present, enhancing the overall weight without adding harshness or solvent notes.
