This massive Imperial Stout, aged for 15 months in bourbon barrels, presents an opulent sensory experience where dark-roast intensity meets the bright acidity of sour cherries. The aroma is saturated with bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and significant bourbon-derived notes of vanilla and toasted oak. On the palate, the Spiritlord Bourbon reveals a velvety, viscous texture that carries layers of black currants and tart red fruit against a backdrop of charred grain and caramel. The 12.5% ABV provides a profound but smooth warmth, while the long-term barrel aging integrates the spirituous character into a harmonious, complex finish of dark cocoa and stone fruit.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40+ SRM). It features a thick, deep tan head with moderate retention that leaves oily legs on the glass, indicative of its high alcohol content and viscosity.
Aroma. High intensity with a rich blend of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and black licorice. The bourbon barrel aging contributes prominent notes of vanilla, toasted oak, and a hint of coconut. The sour cherry addition provides a bright, tart ester profile reminiscent of plums and cherries, while the alcohol is noticeable but refined.
Taste. Initial impression is a complex mix of bittersweet chocolate and espresso-like roast. A mid-palate surge of tart sour cherry provides a fruity acidity that balances the heavy malt. Hop bitterness is moderate but firm, supporting flavors of charred grain, caramel, and bourbon-soaked oak. The finish is long and warming with a lingering dark fruit and cocoa aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Full to very full-bodied with a chewy, velvety, and luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, and a strong, smooth alcohol warmth is present throughout. The fruit addition adds a slight, refreshing crispness to an otherwise heavy mouthfeel.
