Maali Brewing Tropical Blast is an assertive Double IPA that balances a robust 8% ABV with a complex, modern hop profile. Constructed on a foundation of Pilsen and Pale Ale malts, the sensory experience is defined by an intense hop bouquet. A whirlpool of Ekuanot, Huell Melon, and Bravo provides a base of soft fruit and resin, while a heavy double dry hopping of Galaxy, Nelson Sauvin, and Riwaka introduces vivid notes of passion fruit, gooseberry, and crushed lime. Initial impressions of sweet melon and pear are quickly countered by a firm, persistent bitterness. The finish is crisp and resinous, highlighting the synergy of New World hops and enzymatic biotransformation.
Appearance. Deep gold with light orange hues (approx. 8 SRM). Features a moderate-sized, persistent, off-white head with fine lacing. Exhibits a slight haze consistent with intensive double dry-hopping.
Aroma. Intense hop aroma characterized by tropical fruit, passion fruit, and green grape. Distinctive notes of honeydew melon, pear, and lime zest are prominent. Malt character is low and neutral, presenting as a clean, grainy backdrop. Fermentation is clean with a soft, well-integrated alcohol note.
Taste. An initial flash of sweet tropical fruit and melon is immediately overtaken by high hop bitterness. Hop flavors follow the aroma with notes of passion fruit, gooseberry, and citrus lime. The malt flavor is low and supportive, offering a clean, cracker-like profile. The balance is decidedly bitter, leading to a dry, lingering, and resinous finish with no harshness.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate-high. Features a restrained, smooth alcohol warmth and very low hop-derived astringency despite the high hopping rate.
