This Belgian Dark Strong Ale presents a refreshing departure from heavier examples of the style. The profile is anchored by a moderate malt richness derived from caramel sugar, yielding deep coppery hues and brilliant clarity. On the nose, complex aromas of dried plums and figs mingle with subtle peppery phenols and a distinct hint of orange peel. The palate is surprisingly light and digestible, balancing toasty malt sweetness against a crisp, citrus-forward finish. Effervescent champagne-like carbonation lifts the medium-bodied mouthfeel, ensuring the 8.2% alcohol remains well-integrated and smooth, concluding with a clean, lingering brightness that defines its Ardenne heritage.
Appearance. Deep amber to light coppery-brown with brilliant, shimmering reflections. Forms a huge, dense, moussy, and persistent light tan head. Clarity is brilliant.
Aroma. High intensity. Complex aromatic blend of rich, bready-toasty malt and dark caramel. Prominent esters of raisins and dried cherries are complemented by a unique, bright note of orange peel. Low spicy phenols resembling black pepper and a soft, perfumy alcohol presence are evident.
Taste. Initial impression is of smooth malt richness and dark fruit. Flavors of caramel and toasted bread lead into a mid-palate of plums and figs. The addition of orange peel provides a subtle, refreshing citrus tang towards the finish. Bitterness is medium-low, providing just enough balance against the malt sweetness. Finishes surprisingly dry and clean, with a lingering hint of spice and citrus.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a creamy texture. High carbonation, reminiscent of champagne, creates a lively, scrubbing effect on the palate. Alcohol provides a smooth, gentle warmth without any harshness. Very low astringency.
