Appearance. Very deep brown to opaque black (30–40 SRM). Topped with a large, creamy white to pale tan head with excellent retention and thick lacing.
Aroma. High intensity roasted malt aroma, reminiscent of strong coffee and dark chocolate. Subtle underlying notes of toasted caramel and lightly burnt grain. Low earthy hop aromatics with faint dark fruit esters.
Taste. Leading with a strong impact of roasted coffee and dark chocolate, the flavor is complex and deep. A toasted caramel sweetness provides balance against a medium-high bitterness derived from both roasted grains and earthy hops. Fermentation is clean with low esters. The finish is moderately dry and smooth, with a lingering roasted malt aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full to full body with a notably creamy and smooth character. Moderate carbonation. Alcohol warmth is very low, making for an approachable but substantial mouthfeel without astringency.
