This Imperial Stout presents an inviting, sensory-rich experience that belies its significant strength. Dominated by an assertive coffee-like roast and dark chocolate intensity, it reflects its name through deep, charred grain notes. Despite the high gravity, the profile remains approachable and drinkable, focusing on a harmonious blend of bittersweet cocoa and subtle dark fruit esters like raisins and prunes. A firm bitterness balances the residual malt sweetness, leading to a smooth, warming finish. The mouthfeel is velvety and full, providing a luxurious backdrop for the complex interplay of espresso-like char and toasted bread, ensuring the intense flavors meld into a balanced, easygoing character.
Appearance. Jet black and fully opaque (40 SRM). It pours with a thick, creamy, deep tan head that shows moderate retention, leaving slight lacing and visible legs on the glass due to the high alcohol and viscosity.
Aroma. High intensity aroma featuring a prominent blend of roasted coffee, bittersweet chocolate, and cocoa. Underlying notes of black licorice and lightly burnt grain are complemented by moderate esters of dried plums and raisins. Hop aroma is very low, allowing the malt and fermentation complexity to lead.
Taste. The initial impression is a rich wave of dark roasted grains and espresso. The malt profile offers secondary notes of toasted bread and caramel, which support a moderately high bitterness. Flavors of dark chocolate and black currants emerge in the mid-palate. The finish is lingering and bittersweet with a well-integrated alcohol warmth that never becomes harsh or solventy.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full to full-bodied with a velvety, luscious, and chewy texture. Carbonation is moderate, providing enough lift to prevent the beer from feeling syrupy or cloying. A smooth, gentle alcohol warmth is present but remains in the background.
