Appearance. Jet black and opaque (SRM 40). Topped by a dense, persistent tan head with excellent lacing.
Aroma. High intensity aroma featuring dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans. Prominent notes of toasted coconut and sweet vanilla pods are immediate. A low resiny hop aroma provides a counterpoint to the sweetness, while moderate esters of dark fruit are tucked behind the cocoa shell dominance.
Taste. Initial impression is of bittersweet chocolate and heavily toasted grain. The coconut and vanilla emerge in the mid-palate, offering a creamy, nutty sweetness. Medium-high bitterness from roasted malts and hops provides balance against the residual sugars. Hop flavors are low with a slight citrus edge. The finish is lingering and smooth, balancing roasted dryness with a creamy, lactose-driven sweetness.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a pronounced creamy, velvety texture enhanced by maltodextrin. Carbonation is moderate to high. Alcohol warmth is light and well-integrated at 5.8% ABV. No harshness or astringency from the dark grain or cocoa shells.
