Appearance. Deep reddish-brown (SRM 20); moderate cream-colored head with average retention and fine lacing; clear but appears nearly opaque in the glass due to depth of color.
Aroma. High intensity with complex layers of caramel, toffee, and a hint of cocoa; moderate fruity esters reminiscent of pear and dried dark fruit; distinct bourbon-influenced oak and vanilla notes with a touch of anise-like liquorice; low earthy hop aroma.
Taste. Initial malt sweetness of nutty toffee and caramel leads into a complex mid-palate featuring pear esters, liquorice, and a hint of chocolate; moderate bitterness provides necessary balance against the rich malt; notable oak and wood spice character from the barrel aging; finish is medium-dry with a lingering, smooth alcoholic warmth and pleasant malt depth.
