This elevated Wee Heavy takes the robust foundation of the classic MacKroken and infuses it with the deep, earthy complexity of buckwheat honey. At 10.8% ABV, it presents a rich tapestry of toasted bread and dark caramel, characteristic of a Strong Scotch Ale. The addition of buckwheat flower honey introduces a unique layer of musky sweetness and dark floral notes that intertwine with dark fruit esters like raisins and plums. It is a decadent experience, characterized by a velvety, full-bodied texture and a lingering, warming finish that balances its substantial residual sugars with smooth alcohol without becoming cloying.
Appearance. Dark brown with mahogany and deep ruby highlights (22-25 SRM). Pours with a dense, tan head that shows moderate persistence. Pronounced legs are visible on the glass; clarity is brilliant.
Aroma. High intensity. Dominated by rich, bready-toasty malt and heavy caramelization. Distinctive buckwheat honey notes add an earthy, dark syrup, and slightly musky floral character. Moderate dark fruit esters of prune and dried cherry with low alcohol warmth. Hop aroma is absent.
Taste. Initial impression is deeply sweet and malty. Flavors of toffee, burnt sugar, and graham crackers are layered with the bold, savory sweetness of buckwheat honey. Low hop bitterness provides just enough structure to balance the sugars. Mid-palate reveals dark fruit esters and a hint of grainy roast. The finish is long and warming, with a pleasant lingering sweetness from the honey.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied with a thick, chewy, and creamy viscosity. Low to moderate carbonation. Significant alcohol warmth is smooth and well-integrated, providing a prominent chest-warming sensation. No astringency.
