This Baltic Porter from Laugar Brewery presents a sophisticated, multi-layered profile characterized by a deep, rich malt foundation. At 7.5% ABV, the alcohol is deceptively smooth, providing a gentle warmth that complements the complex array of dark fruit esters, including notes of prunes, raisins, and black currants. A smooth, Schwarzbier-like roasted character emerges mid-palate, offering hints of dark chocolate and licorice without any harshness or burnt acridity. The use of Munich and Vienna malts provides a sturdy, bready backbone that balances the clean, lager-like fermentation, resulting in a velvety, full-bodied experience with a lingering, dryish finish of roasted coffee.
Appearance. Opaque dark brown with reddish-copper highlights at the edges. Displays a thick, persistent, tan-colored head with excellent lacing. Clarity is high, though the depth of color makes it appear nearly opaque.
Aroma. High-intensity aroma of deep toast, molasses, and licorice. Complex fruit esters of cherries and raisins are prominent, backed by a subtle vinous, Port-like quality. Clean fermentation profile with no hop aroma or sharp acidity.
Taste. Initial malt sweetness of toffee and nutty caramel transitions into a smooth roast profile reminiscent of dark chocolate and coffee. Features prominent yet smooth roasted flavors that stop short of being burnt. Initial sweetness is balanced by a medium-low bitterness (roughly 20-40 IBU context), leading to a complex finish of dark dried fruits and mild licorice.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally smooth on the palate. Medium-high carbonation provides a mouth-filling texture that prevents the beer from feeling heavy or cloying. A well-integrated, moderate alcohol warmth is present throughout.
