War Requiem is a formidable Imperial Stout that commands attention with its profound depth and barrel-aged complexity. The sensory journey begins with an intense fusion of dark-roasted malts, yielding notes of bittersweet chocolate and espresso, further elevated by the distinct influence of Scotch whisky barrels. This aging process introduces sophisticated layers of peat smoke, heather honey, and toasted oak that weave through a tapestry of dried fruits like raisins and figs. The high alcohol content provides a well-integrated, smooth warmth, harmonizing with a firm bitterness that ensures a bittersweet yet lingering finish. It is a bold, velvety experience that balances raw intensity with barrel-refined elegance.

Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40+ SRM). It pours with a thick, dense, mocha-colored head that shows excellent retention and leaves significant lacing. Visible legs reflect the high alcohol and high viscosity.

Aroma. High intensity aroma of charred grain, dark chocolate, and roasted coffee beans. The Scotch whisky barrel influence is prominent, contributing notes of earthy peat, subtle smoke, and a touch of toasted oak. Low fruit esters of black currant and prune are present, alongside a pleasant, spirit-forward warmth.

Taste. Massive initial impression of dark chocolate and roasted malt. The mid-palate reveals complex barrel notes of peaty whisky, vanilla, and honey. Hop bitterness is high but balanced by the rich malt sweetness, leading to a bittersweet finish. Flavors of black licorice and dried figs emerge as the beer warms. The aftertaste is long, featuring lingering roast and a smooth whisky character.

Mouthfeel. Full to very full-bodied with a luxurious, chewy, and velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, providing just enough lift. A noticeable but smooth alcohol warmth is present without being harsh or solventy.
