Laugar / Kaapse Azala
This American Stout, a collaboration between Laugar and Kaapse Brouwers, offers a robust sensory experience driven by unconventional additions. At 7% ABV, the profile leads with intense roasted notes of espresso and dark chocolate, while the inclusion of Rye adds a distinctively spicy, earthy depth to the malt bill. Coffee husks, or cascara, contribute a subtle, tea-like fruitiness and a hint of acidity that brightens the heavy roast. Oak chips provide a structural woody dryness and faint vanilla undertones. Assertive citrusy and resiny American hops balance the rich body, resulting in a complex, lingering finish of charred grain and firm bitterness.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (SRM 40). Topped by a large, persistent, tan-to-light brown head with dense lacing.
Aroma. High intensity roast-forward aroma featuring dark chocolate and burnt coffee. Supporting notes of spicy rye grain and a subtle, woody oak presence. Low citrusy and resiny hop character is present alongside a faint, dried-fruit ester profile from the coffee husks.
Taste. Initial impression is of aggressive roasted grain and bittersweet chocolate. The mid-palate introduces a sharp, spicy rye character and a delicate tannic woodiness from the oak chips. Moderate resinous and citrusy hop flavors emerge before a firm bitterness takes hold. The finish is medium-dry with lingering notes of roasted coffee beans and a smooth, light alcohol presence.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a somewhat creamy texture. Carbonation is medium-high. A light, smooth alcohol warmth is present, accompanied by a faint, well-integrated astringency from the dark malts and oak.
