A collaboration between Laugar, Basquery, and Drunken Bros, Hopzilla is a prototypical Hazy IPA that lives up to its name as a hop monster. The addition of wheat and oats in the grist provides a substantial, pillowy canvas for an explosion of tropical fruit character. Intense aromas of mango, pineapple, and citrus zest dominate the senses, while the palate enjoys a soft, velvety texture that masks a moderate, well-integrated bitterness. This beer avoids any harshness, finishing with a lingering juicy impression and a clean, bready malt backbone that ensures high drinkability despite its intense aromatic profile.
Appearance. Straw to light gold (4-6 SRM) with a characteristic opaque haze and a vibrant shine. Features a thick, rocky, meringue-like white head with high retention and significant lacing.
Aroma. High intensity with dominant notes of tropical fruit, stone fruit, and bright citrus. The malt character is low, presenting as lightly bready and grainy. Fermentation is clean with supportive fruity esters; no herbal or grassy hop notes are present.
Taste. High fruity hop flavors including pineapple, peach, and citrus. Malt flavor is low to medium, showing clean cereal and bready notes from the wheat and oats. Perceived bitterness is moderate but masked by the soft body, leading to an off-dry, smooth finish with no harsh aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a soft, silky, and pillowy texture. Carbonation is moderate. Overall smooth mouthfeel with negligible alcohol warmth and no detectable astringency or raw starch character.
