Ladd & Lass Brewing The Pale Project

The Pale Project is a vibrant American Pale Ale that bridges the gap between early 2000s nostalgia and modern hop intensity. It opens with a punchy bouquet of resinous pine and bright grapefruit—hallmarks of the classics—intertwined with contemporary notes of ripe mango and passionfruit. A lean base of neutral pale malt provides a clean, crackery foundation that allows the hops to shine without overwhelming sweetness. The balance is expertly struck, delivering a firm bitterness that lingers just long enough to invite another sip. It is a heartfelt tribute, offering a crisp, refreshing, and deeply aromatic drinking experience.
Appearance. Deep gold to pale amber with excellent clarity. Pours with a moderately large, frothy white head that exhibits persistent retention and leaves delicate lacing on the glass.
Aroma. Moderately high hop intensity featuring a complex blend of citrus peel, forest pine, and tropical fruit. A low, clean maltiness provides a supportive backdrop of fresh bread and light toasted notes. The fermentation profile is very clean with negligible esters.
Taste. The initial impression is hop-centric, bursting with flavors of orange zest and resinous herbs. Moderate to high bitterness provides a sharp but pleasant structure against a slim malt backbone of grain and biscuit. The finish is dry and crisp, with a lingering citrusy hop character and a clean, refreshing aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, well-rounded texture. Moderate carbonation provides a lively tingle on the tongue. At 6.1% ABV, there is a very light, well-integrated alcohol warmth that enhances the overall presence without becoming harsh.

The Pale Project is a collaboration between three homebrew-loving friends—Shawn Miller,
Tony Ochsner (co-owner of Micro Homebrew), and L&L brewer Nick Ladd—who cut their
craft teeth on early 2000’s pale ales, but also appreciate today’s more hop-forward pale
ales. This is an ongoing project that seeks to find the happy balance between traditional
and contemporary takes on pale ale. This iteration is lightly malty with a balanced dry hop
of Citra and Cascade.
This beer is brewed in honor of Shawn, L&L’s biggest supporter and loudest advocate. He
was an amazing human who always led by example and is fiercely missed by all who knew
him. We hope this project conveys his passion for the craft of beer making and captures
his spectacular spirit. A portion of proceeds from sales of this beer will be donated to the
Cascadia College Foundation to help fund the Shawn Miller Memorial Scholarship for First
Generation Students.
