This classic Imperial Stout presents a masterful showcase of eleven grains, delivering a profound sensory depth. The complex grist, featuring Pale, Munich, Amber, Crystal, Caramalt, Dextrin, Black, and Chocolate malts, creates a layered foundation of espresso, bittersweet cocoa, and toasted bread. The addition of oats provides a velvety, luscious texture that carries flavors of dark raisins and burnt grain from the roasted barley. At 8.5% ABV, it offers a gentle, integrated warmth that complements the firm bitterness and rich residual sweetness. The result is a harmonious, full-bodied experience that balances intense roasted character with a smooth, lingering finish of dark fruit and molasses.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (40 SRM). Pours with a dense, persistent deep tan head that leaves thick lacing on the glass. High viscosity is apparent in the slow-moving legs when swirled.
Aroma. High intensity of roasted grain, specifically dark chocolate, espresso, and black licorice. Underlying layers of caramel sweetness and toasted bread from the Munich and Amber malts. Moderate esters of prune and dried fig are present, alongside a clean, low alcohol warmth.
Taste. A rich, complex explosion of bittersweet chocolate, heavy roast, and charred grain. Significant malt sweetness from the Crystal and Caramalt is balanced by a firm hop bitterness and the acrid bite of roasted barley. Middle palate reveals dark fruit and toasted nuts. The finish is long and warming with a lingering bittersweet cocoa aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a velvety, creamy texture enhanced by the use of oats. Carbonation is moderate. A smooth, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present without being harsh or solventy.
