This Black IPA navigates a complex sensory landscape, skillfully balancing deep roasted malts with a vibrant, modern hop character. El Dorado takes the lead, providing a bold tropical profile of pineapple and stone fruit, while a precise addition of Talus introduces nuances of pink grapefruit and dried rose petals. Enigma contributes further depth with subtle hints of redcurrant and melon. The dark malt foundation offers restrained notes of milk chocolate and toasted bread without any harsh acridity, ensuring the hops remain the primary focus. It finishes remarkably dry and crisp, delivering a harmonious interplay of dark aesthetics and bright, tropical intensity.
Appearance. Deep ebony to near-black (approximately 35 SRM) and opaque. The beer is topped by a persistent, creamy, tan-colored head with excellent lacing.
Aroma. High intensity hop-forward aroma featuring pineapple, mango, and stone fruit. Secondary notes of pink grapefruit and a distinct floral, dried rose quality emerge, supported by subtle berry-like esters. The malt character is low to moderate, presenting as clean cocoa and toasted bread rather than burnt grain.
Taste. The initial impression is hop-centric, delivering layers of tropical fruit and citrus peel bitterness. Bitterness is firm and assertive, in line with a high-IBU profile, but remains smooth. The malt provides a supportive, restrained background of light chocolate and coffee without ashy or roasted-barley harshness. The finish is dry and crisp with a lingering resinous and fruity aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate, lending a clean prickle to the tongue. Alcohol warmth is light and well-integrated at 6% ABV, with no perceptible astringency from the dark malts.
